Temporary positions are involved in most publications at Norwegian universities. For NTNUs status as a leading international university, it is crucial to prioritize these independent research positions, even in times of financial challenges. Resent focus on cost control have led to a decrease in NTNU funded temporary positions. Investing in PhDs and postdocs is an investment in the university’s long-term success.

Being a PhD candidate, researcher or postdoctoral fellow is an exciting yet uncertain journey. These temporary positions offer no guaranteed career path in academia. To support career development, strong professional networks are essential. NTNU must take a more active role in facilitating opportunities for PhDs and postdocs to build networks—both within and beyond academia. Strengthening these connections will enhance research, improve collaboration, and ultimately contribute to NTNU’s success.
The Temporary Heroes
A recent Norwegian Universitetsavisa article highlighted results from PhD
association Dion's survey on how temporary employees experience
onboarding. The findings reveal that colleagues in similar positions are the
most important factor in helping temporary staff settle in.
A huge thank you
to all employees who help newcomers adjust! However, the survey showed that
over 50% of new employees had not settled within six weeks. This number is far too
high. Several months of work can be saved by providing mentor and clear written guidance. NTNU must ensure that alle employees are familiar with and use the
official onboarding guides. Having
personally followed this model during my own onboarding three months ago, I can
attest to its effectiveness. I hope all new employees have seen these resources.
According to Dion`s survey most have not.
